Phases Of The Moon

Among the celestial object moon is the most attention drawing one, because of its nature of waning and waxing between, full moon day and new moon days. The event at we can see fully illuminated portion of moon is called full moon day and where as when we can not see the illuminated portion of moon is called as new moon day. These periodical events leads us to construct a calendar of 12 months.
Waning and waxing of the illuminated portion of moon as seen from earth at different dates between full moon and new moon days is termed as phases of moon. It is fascinating that when earth is in between sun and moon we can see fully illuminated portion of moon ( full moon day). Where as when moon is in between earth and sun we can not see the moon at all (New moon day). This model demonstrate the position of moon at full moon and new moon days, waning and waxing of moon. Here a sphere representing moon is painted half wit white and half with black, is made to rotate and revolve around a centre where earth is situated in front of a glowing bulb representing
sun. The sphere representing moon is made to rotate and revolve in such a way that when earth is in between sun and Moon, white painted portion of moon is facing towards earth indicating full moon day. After completion of half revolution (sphere) moon comes, in between sun and earth with black painted portion towards earth indicating new moon day at the same time white painted portion is facing towards sun that shows the portion of moon which is not visible to earth is illuminated by sun, ie., on that day illuminated portion of moon is not towards the earth. A circular washer shows how much of portion of illuminated moon can be seen from the earth in different days from new moon day to full moon day and full moon day to new moon day.
This leads to under stand the concept of phases of moon, which is not clearly understood by a student through charts. This model also shows reasons for change in the rising and setting time of moon.
